Chapter 13

Thomas navigated the narrow country lanes way faster than Annie was comfortable with, but this had been one of the most bizarre days of his life and there was still no sign of it being over. As promised, he had told his cousin about Jane and Ellie. He was not worried about the content of his conversation going any further because the one thing he was sure of was that Annie knew how to keep a secret.

He brought the Volvo estate to a stop outside of John and Joseph’s place. The cars were still parked out front of the small croft house. It had once been a picturesque cottage. Their father had painted it white for their mother. But now the paint had chipped and flaked. The door and sills had not been cared for either, and age had taken a toll giving the property a ramshackle appearance.

There were no lights on despite it being dark outside. Yes, the power was out, but there was not a man, woman or child on the island who did not understand the importance of having candles, lanterns and the like.

“I told you. They’re not here,” Annie said.

“Hmm,” Thomas replied, getting out of the car.

“Where are you going?” Annie asked, following him.

“Just having a wee look around,” he replied, flicking his torch on. He walked up to the door and tried the handle, but it was locked. Strange. It was a rare thing for anyone to lock their doors on the island. He then walked around the property, occasionally flicking the beam of light in another direction to look for any clues, but none were forthcoming.

“I’m really worried, Thomas. There’s something not right.”

Their travels took them to the back door, which Thomas tried, this time to find it open. “You stay here,” he said, stepping inside. “John, Joseph, Angus,” he called as he walked in through the small kitchen.

Bottles were strewn over the countertops, and it smelt like a bar after closing time. He continued to the living room, but there was still no sign of the three men. He moved the ray of the torch around and focused on a half-full ashtray. He stepped a little closer and hovered over it with his hand. There was no heat, suggesting the final stubs to be extinguished in it had been a little while back at least. He continued to search and saw the case for a pornographic DVD lying on top of the player. That explains why the front door was locked anyway.

An empty whisky bottle sat in the middle of the coffee table, surrounded by three glasses. He walked across to the fireplace and bent down, carefully reaching out his hand. Stone cold. This hasn’t been lit today.

It had been too cold a day not to light the fire. There was a coal bucket and a pile of logs next to it, so there was no excuse. A sound made him jerk around to see Annie standing behind him.

“I told you to wait outside.
